Back and Bodyworks Massage Kansas City Highlights The Benefits of Foam Rollers

Standard

Here at Back and Bodyworks, voted #1 for Massage in Kansas City, we always try to inform our clients of exercises, stretches and things they could do at home in between massages.  Today, Amanda Eichler, one of our Nationally Licensed Massage Therapist, is going to share with us the benefits of foam rollers.

Amanda says, “I’m sure everyone has heard of the foam roller, but I’m finding out some people don’t know the benefits or how to foam roll.”

Amanda personally recommends that all of her clients foam roll, but the ones who greatly benefit from it are athletes.  People who work out or clients that always have those trouble knots that never want to leave.

Most people ask Amanda, “What is foam rolling?”  Amanda explains that, ” it stretches out muscles and tendons but can also break down soft tissue adhesions and scar tissue.”  She goes on to explain, “You are directly affecting the fascia, which is a web-like sheath that covers every muscle, tendon, ligament, nerve, vein and artery in the human body. But it also supports organs and joints and acts as a shock absorber and is very rich in nerve supply.”

Amanda stresses how your strength, flexibility and fitness depend on your fascia health.

Of course everyone asks Amanda, “Where can you buy one?”  She says she purchased hers at Wal-Mart in the exercise department for about $15.00 and added it was the best money she’s ever spent.

Now that you have a foam roller…. how do you use it?  Amanda suggests, “You use your body weight on the rollers on the muscles that are bothering you.  Some rollers come with a guide explaining some exercises or you could GOOGLE them.”

She recommends rolling for about 10 minutes before and after your workout.

It’s amazing that some of her clients have tried it and couldn’t imagine their life before their foam roller.

A little bit about Amanda: Amanda graduated from Vatterott College-St. Joseph, MO with a diploma in Massage Therapy in February 2008. She became Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage in May 2008. When she first started out she worked in the back of a day spa 2 days a week hoping to build clientele. She knew she wanted to have a bigger impact so she made the move to Kansas City, MO and started working at Back and Bodyworks in August 2008. She always knew she wanted to help people in the healthcare field but wasn’t sure which way to go, amazed with how the body responds to touch Amanda fell in love with the profession. Her favorite type of massage to give is deep tissue, but don’t let her small size fool you. When asked what she most loves about her job, “I love when people come in with pain they’ve had for years and after a few sessions they have better range of motion and less pain. I also like getting to take away stress for an hour, people come out so refreshed.”
